The Nature of Evil (2)-Suffering, Devil, Spirits

Part 2 of the Nature of Evil (Part 1 is below, please read it first, otherwise the following section may not make sense)

But this then brings us to the topic of evil and the devil….

When I was younger I was tormented by things I saw. Many of these spirits or things I saw were scary to me. They were scary because I could not understand what was happening – it was very out of the ordinary. The fact that I was being raised in a Christian family and was being taught Christian beliefs made these scary things, which I did not understand, into evil (and scary) occurrences. For every “evil” thing that I saw there were also positive or neutral forces that I saw. As I grew older many of these specific forces left me as I simply chose to dismiss them (once I found out I could). At no point did I ever feel that either the good, evil or neutral forces had any power over me. They all left when commanded. So while for a time I chose not to have them as part of my reality, does not mean they didn’t exist.

Now, I intentionally seek out interaction with my spirit guides and angels and have found that if I stay grounded and realize my life is my own, these guides can offer their advice but they cannot run my life. I am responsible for my own thoughts and actions. Yet just like someone else offering me their opinion or trying to force their views on me, I can choose to accept it or reject it. But as in any interaction we must be aware of the messages we are getting and how we are interpreting and receiving those messages.

I give this very brief glimpse about my history (I will write about some of the things I saw specifically in a future post) because it forms part of my belief structure. No one could convince me that the spirit realm does not exist. Also, it is important to note that I perceived negative and positive forces. This indicates that there is something that can perceived as evil (and good) force outside of us, whether it be on this physical plane or another.

But to say it is evil is to go a bit too far. While I was absolutely freaked out, looking back on those scary spiritual experiences I can’t honestly say the things I saw felt evil. Rather I just did not understand what they were. Seeing a blue hand coming out of my wall when I was 10 years old and wide awake with the lights on is a very out of the ordinary experience. The unexplained phenomenon induced fear, and because of my young Christian beliefs I assumed this unexplained fear was due to evil or the devil.

But even recently I have had guides and what felt like harmful forces with me at certain times. How are these explained if I don’t believe in the ultimate evil (the devil)? First let me digress once again and explain why I don’t believe there is a devil or beings that are completely evil.

If everything comes from God, then even the devil is of God. The fallen angel story does not matter; it is symbolic of the duality or relativity of our planet. Everything comes from God and yes this does mean while we are in the world of the relative there will be opposites of what we believe God to be. But like just like the case of hell, there is no ultimate enemy of God. The devil once again is each of us – ourselves and also how we treat ourselves and others. We do things so horrendous to ourselves and to others that we believe it has to be something external. This is partly true as we will soon find out…but to continue with this point first…. We create devils and ultimate evils, all around us because they explain what we are ourselves are doing and thus we don’t have to take the blame for it. If we are looking to label something as opposite of God – we humans on earth are it. As we evolve spirituality become more one with God, but for many people on this planet they are almost the opposite of what we believe God to be. We are our own devil, and we need to overcome ourselves in order to move closer to God.

We have a subtle tug in our hearts from when we were very young that life should be fun, and that we should love and experience the world freely, but little by little that is stripped away from us. We become like the world that raised us. We are initially hurt by others when we are very young, we don’t understand this mistreatment and so we begin to fear. We are brought up in a world of reward and punishment and so it seems fair to assume that there is an Ultimate reward and punishment for how we live our life, heaven and hell. But this belief only makes us more fearful, more reserved and separates us even further from a loving God which many believe they are getting closer to by adopting fear based beliefs. (Separation from God is also separating ourselves from others, not showing the true loving us, and not loving others for who they are. Others and this planet are also a part of God, just as we are. Thus by blocking ourselves off from others, we show our separation from God.)

As we begin to experience more and more fear in our life, we begin to tell lies to ourselves and others. We put on masks and we feel threatened if that mask or ego is endangered by someone else. And so we hurt others to protect ourselves, but we aren’t even protecting ourselves, we are protecting a manufactured image of ourselves. Others hurt us to protect their mask/ego, so we try even harder to please them by being more of something we are not (and this of course is based on pleasing them, and they are not representing what they truly are) and our masks get more detailed and require more and more protection. We create hell on earth and completely forget about our soul’s journey to overcome and grow while we are having our human experience.

We have become bitter and resentful. There is only a sliver of us that wants to show love, because we are so afraid that after wearing the mask for so long, it would seem foolish to just remove it now. We die sad and alone (maybe not alone physically, but the feeling of being alone because we never showed anyone the real us, and we don’t know the real person inside anyone around us).

When we die we leave the physical and we go through a life in review. We view our life now from the perspective that we are no longer in it and thus are not in our physical body with our physical mind. Obviously we see things that we did that were productive in our life, and we see things we did that were detrimental to ourselves and others. This soul (and our soul eventually) is currently in the spirit realm and can guide humans currently on the planet (that is us in the here and now on planet earth). Since this person was not capable of leading their own life very well, they may provide great advice (what not to do, what they should have done etc) or they could feel very negative to us.

This explains the negative or evil spirit (as well as good spirit) phenomenon. It even explains ghosts who are tied in some way to this earth. Because we have very negative people on earth that will return to the spirit realm, it is logical that there will be very negative spirits until eventually all us start showing more love and eventually the entire population’s (and future generations) consciousness shifts to that of love. The spirits have access to our world, just as we have access to their world. But we cannot control our guides and our guides cannot control us.

But this still leaves the question of possession….

  1. I agree with much of what you said in here but my understanding is that the protection work we do is to keep those spirits who are not meant to function as guides for us (as they still have much to learn themselves) away from us so that we are not confused. I do agree that they exist and with your definition of who they are – ones who struggled during their own lives and were left embittered, so much so that some have chosen to remain earthbound in fact rather than return to the spirit realms for healing.

I would also toss (as a counterbalance) into this post Wayne Dyer’s words that “loving people live in a loving world, hostile people live in a hostile world – yet it is the same world.”

  2. Yes, you are absolutely right. Protection exercises, or if you are a very positive person, will protect us from negative energies and attract us positive ones. In an earlier post on spirit guides the concept of protection is looked at – or at least included as part of the exercise.

I love Wayne Dyer. Some of his books were probably the first I read on spirituality and so I owe much of the head way I have made on my own journey to the insights he shared.

    Thanks for adding that :)
